Training Service Department
RJRA is skilled in engineering and planning training that follows the Texas Department of Transportation guidelines and procedures. Training classes include courses on road building and highway project development. RJRA is also available to provide “brown bag” training sessions on any of our service areas.
Course 1: "Building Roads the TxDOT Way"
The course provides both newer and more-experienced (but non-technical) employees an understanding of the basic steps and terminologies used in the development of highway projects in Texas. Understanding these basic processes and requirements will generate a greater appreciation of the importance of the participant’s contribution to the successful completion of highway projects in the state of Texas.
Course Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe how TxDOT projects are developed from inception to construction
- Explain the factors that impact the planning, design and construction of highways
- Identify terminology and acronyms common to the three project authorization levels: PLAN, DEVELOP and CONSTRUCT
- List the basic project development responsibilities of TxDOT divisions and districts
Course 2: "Introduction to Highway Project Development"
The development of a highway project involves numerous activities, many disciplines, and can be a very complex process. Federal and state laws and regulations mandate many of the development steps. This course will provide an oversight of this process – beginning at the identification of a need for a highway project and concluding with the receipt of bids from contractors at the letting.
An understanding of the project development process is important for all members of the development team. Knowing at least the basic steps in the process and knowing where to obtain more detailed information as needed are essential.
It is also important to recognize that there are numerous disciplines involved in the development process, including planners, designers, public affairs personnel, environmental specialists, surveyors, CAD operators, information resource personnel, contract specialists, engineers, engineering technicians and more
Course Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the major processes in project development and the interaction of the various disciplines to create a viable highway project
- Effectively use the “TxDOT Project Development Process Manual” as a guide for project development
- Explain the major components of highway plans and specifications
- Describe the major resources available for project development (TxDOT and AASHTO publications, software, Internet and TxDOT Intranet Information, etc.)
- List the main funding sources for highway development
- Describe in general terms the organization of TxDOT
