- Pathway to Success Conference &
eweek
This year, as part of National Engineers Week, better known as "eweek", RJRA participated in a community event held in San Antonio's Edgewood Independent School District known as the "Pathway to Success" Conference. Through this conference, RJRA was able to interact with dozens of secondary school students. RJRA provided a short presentation that featured a current RJRA transportation project. The children were organized into groups, in which each student acted as a different stakeholder, and together they had to determine the placement of a new roadway while staying within project constraints, and while working with grievances from fellow student-stakeholders. The idea behind the activity was to show students the process that must take place in order to determine the placement of a new roadway. - Un Sabado Gigante in Engineering
- Kennedy High School Career Fair
Un Sabado Gigante in Engineering, a free one-day program opened to all middle school students in Texas, with a focus on the Hispanic population, is designed to expose and inspire students to the opportunities in Engineering and Science. The event includes a simultaneous program for parents to educate them on the advantages of a college education. Engineers and professionals from Central Texas, including RJRA, came together to participate one-on-one with youth. In addition to serving as monetary sponsor, several members of the RJRA team volunteered to work with students as facilitators on a project activity intended to teach students the engineering process through the creation of Glurch Balls. Students were given a budget to buy supplies and worked with RJRA staff to develop a sucessful Glurch Ball. Ultimately, the goal was to expose students to a wide variety of engineer types and give them the opportunity to work with engineers on a project.
RJRA actively participates in career fair events at various schools to promote careers in engineering. The Kennedy High School Career Fair provided RJRA employees with the opportunity to meet high school students in grades 9-12 to discuss the importance of math and science and opportunities in the field of engineering. Kennedy High School is located within the Edgewood ISD which serves a predominantly Hispanic community in San Antonio, Texas.
